Hybrid AI FAQs

Common Questions

Will what I learn become outdated as AI evolves?

No, and that's purposeful. Rather than teaching you to master today's specific platforms, this program builds your ability to evaluate any AI tool, apply it to real business problems, and make smart decisions about where and how to use it. Through Smeal's Future-Ready AI Framework, you'll develop a foundation in concepts, frameworks, and applied judgment that doesn't expire when the next tool drops. The landscape will keep shifting, but your ability to navigate it won't.

How do I know the curriculum is relevant to what employers actually want?

Rather than guessing what organizations need, we built the curriculum in direct collaboration with employers so every course reflects the real challenges they're asking their teams to solve.

How will this program impact my work while I’m enrolled?

It will impact your work from your first class. That’s how the program is structured. Every course is built around application to your actual work, so you're generating value now, throughout the program, building toward graduation. You'll address real business challenges, bring new capabilities into your role, and create measurable impact for your organization throughout the program, not just when you cross the finish line.

What is the typical weekly time commitment?

Most students will spend twenty hours per week on classes when two courses per semester are scheduled (with each three-credit course requiring an average of ten hours of work per week). This estimate includes time spent in class and commitments outside of class (teamwork, assignments, etc.). Students work with their adviser to determine when the best semester is for their elective course. Placement of the elective will impact their weekly time commitment.

Is this a technical program?

No, the Master of Applied AI for Business Transformation is not a purely technical program. While you will work with AI systems, analytics, and intelligent tools, the emphasis is on applying AI to solve business problems and drive organizational impact. You do not need advanced programming or data science experience to succeed. The program is also designed for technically experienced professionals who want to better connect AI capabilities to business strategy, leadership, and transformation. The curriculum focuses on the intersection of business and technology rather than AI development alone.

How long does it take to complete the program?

This is a 2-year program, designed to be completed at that pace with your cohort.

What are the in-person requirements?

Students attend 4 2.5 day on-campus residencies, one at the start of each fall and spring semester. All other learning is live remote synchronous with the exception of one asynchronous elective.

What is the typical weekly time commitment?

Most students will spend 20 hours per week on the program. That includes time spent in class and work outside of class.

Can international students apply to the program?

Yes, international applicants are welcome to apply. However, please note that the Hybrid MAAIBT is a part-time program for working professionals and does not offer I-20 sponsorship.

What level of technical background do I need to succeed?

You do not need a technical background to succeed in this program. The focus is on applying AI to business challenges, not on coding or building algorithms from scratch. Familiarity with business data, spreadsheets, or analytics tools can be helpful, but the program is designed to teach you how to use AI, intelligent prompting, and analytics in real-world business settings. The program is also valuable for professionals with technical backgrounds who want to strengthen their business strategy, leadership, and organizational transformation skills.

What skills or competencies do I need to succeed?

To succeed in the program, you should have strong analytical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a curiosity about how AI can transform business. Successful students will be collaborative critical thinkers excited to apply AI solutions to real-world business challenges. Being comfortable with data, basic spreadsheets, or business analytics tools helps, but the program will help you gain the necessary comfort to translate these into practical AI skills.

Why should I choose this program?

You should choose the Master of Applied AI for Business Transformation because it prepares you to lead in an AI-driven business world. The program teaches practical, immediately applicable skills in agentic AI, intelligent prompting, and AI-driven analytics, enabling you to solve real business problems and drive measurable impact. With a convenient hybrid format, live virtual classes, and brief on-campus immersions, you can advance your career while balancing work. You’ll also build a network of like-minded peers and gain the confidence to integrate AI strategically across organizations.
